Tourmaline is the most colourful of all gemstones and occurs in all colours, but pink, red, green, blue and multicolored are its most well-known colours with blue (Indicolite) being one of the rarer colours.

Liddicoatite tourmaline is a calcium-rich lithium tourmaline, typically exhibiting extraordinarily beautiful geometrically patterned colour zoning usually in the form of triangles or the “Mercedes” star shape.

Scientifically though , tourmaline is not a single mineral, but a group of minerals related in their physical and chemical properties. The mineral Elbaite is the member of the Tourmaline group that is responsible for almost all the gem varieties. Three other members of the group - Schorl, Dravite and Liddicoatite, are seldom used as gemstones.

More than 4,000 naturally occurring minerals (inorganic solids that have a characteristic chemical composition and specific crystal structure) have been found on Earth. They are formed of simple molecules or individual elements arranged in repeating chains, sheets, or three-dimensional arrays.

Minerals are typically formed when molten rock, or magma, cools, or by separating out of mineral-rich water, such as that in underground caverns. In general, mineral particles are small, having formed within confined areas such as lava flows or between grains of sediments. Large crystals found in geodes and other rocks are relatively rare.

Rocks themselves are made of clusters or mixtures of minerals, and minerals and rocks affect landform development and form natural resources such as gold, tin, iron, marble, and granite.

Old trade beads etched with soda. The etching of beads evolved in the Indus Valley and with the Harappan Civilization, (2500-1500 BC). Under the rule of Chandragupta Mauria, the Maurian Period, dating from 300 BC to 100 AD the culture of etched beads reached its peak. So far I have not been able to determine if these are original beads form 100 AD or copies made by monks some 300-400 years ago. I am also not clear if these are Grossular Green Garnet beads of Green African Agate. All I know is that they have a rich history and look great...

‘Atlantisite’ is the trade name given to the combination of Green Serpentine with Stichtite from Tasmania. Also called Tasmanite, it is a relatively new discovery in the gem world and has a unique combination of colours and includes the yellow-green matrix of Serpentine that holds the purple and green Stichtite that only occurs in Stichtite Hill, a small hilltop in Zeehan, Tasmania, where it is mined exclusively.  

Serpentine, is said by mystics to help with emotional cleansing, psychic powers, and attract love and money. Stichtite is a stone that brings emotional awareness and expansion. It is a very calming stone that brings tranquility and peace to individuals and to one's environment. In combination, Atlantisite blends together the properties of both these minerals is also considered to be a stone that resonates to and links the energies of the Crown and Heart chakras.
